Why being Genuine is Crucial for Self-Confidence
In a world that often values social media filters and expectations of perfection, it is so easy to lose sight of our true authentic selves. But what does being AUTHENTIC really mean, what does God say about being ourselves, and how do we break away from the challenge to compare ourselves to others? In today's blog, we will discuss all this and provide tips to embrace your true self and confidence!
What is Authenticity?
Simply put, authenticity is being true to oneself, embracing who you truly are, and expressing the truth in your thoughts, actions, and interactions with others. It's about living in alignment with what you believes, what your values are, and what you are passionate about. It is NOT being someone you are not. It is NOT about being perfect. It's NOT about having all the answers.
I often watch people close to me, and it saddens me at times when incredible people do not allow their TRUE self to emerge. So often, I see these people want to portray the perfect family, the perfect home, the perfect image. And what happens? I see their happiness fade, their smiles become more masked, and their personalities change into someone who is not who they are at the core.
How do we prevent that from happening to ourselves?
Start by taking time to reflect on your values, passions, and what TRULY matters to you. Ask yourself the meaningful questions such as, "What brings me Joy?", "What are my core beliefs?", and "What are my strengths and weaknesses?" Starting with these questions will help you understand your authentic self better.
Once you answer those questions, we must be prepared to embrace vulnerability, which involves being open and honest and willing to show our true selves, regardless of facing rejection or judgement. When we are able to be vulnerable, genuine connections and trust in relationships grow.
Letting go of Comparison is also necessary. When we compare ourselves to others we are actually undermining our true authenticity. Comparing ourselves to others truly takes away our joy in what we do have. We have to remember that everyone's journey is different. Everyone will have different times and seasons. Also, airing your dirty laundry on social media is not a healthy thing, but being overly boastful about how marvelous life is sometimes is a way to hide deeper feelings. We need to remember that our own growth and happiness is what we need to celebrate!
Surrounding yourself with people who are genuine and also authentic is another way to stay true to ourselves. I have told my students and clients for years that sometimes the "Best Friends are not the BEST Friends for you." This can be a difficult lesson to learn and often times is hard to recognize. However, when you have people in your live that accept and appreciate you for who you are, this will encourage you to thrive. I always think about the people in my life who I can truly be myself around, that I do not fear their judgement and I know they will praise me and raise me up...these people have help me become a more confident person who can be my imperfect self with no apologies! It is quite empowering, indeed!
You know, when I look at authenticity on a spiritual perspective, I am reminded that we are made in the image of God, and the same power that rose Jesus from the grave is also in us. Psalm 139:14 says, "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." (NIV) So God tells us that our authentic selves should be embraced by appreciating the design and purpose He put into us. Let us embrace our authentic selves, for it is through our authenticity that God's light can shine brightly.
Authenticity serves as the cornerstone for self-confidence, embracing our uniqueness, and honoring our true selves. It is important to remember that the pressure to present a perfect image acts as corrosion to self-confidence. So surround yourself with others who inspire you to be YOU, don't be afraid to be vulnerable, let go of the habit of comparing yourself, and never ever forget who YOU ARE! You are the Daughter of a King! And YOU ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE!
